CatholicCare and Savvy Fitness have joined together to improve the health, wellbeing and fitness of ageing people in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven.
The 'Be Stronger, Live Longer' program includes a one hour personal training session, two hour information session and two group sessions per week.
The first cohort recently completed the 11 week program, and participants will celebrate their achievements at SeaCliff Restaurant this Wednesday.
The goal of the program is to promote independence and encourage participants to stay fit and strong, allowing them to remain in their own home longer. Information session topics included nutrition, sleep therapy, physiotherapy and legal issues.
Margaret was a full time carer for her husband who recently died. She was a little lost so when her son encouraged her to register, it was a blessing.
"I had a big hole in my life. I was muddling around in a fog. I had a list of things to do but I couldn't even get that done. Being a carer, you don't really think about yourself.
"I had to do lots of heavy lifting in my caring role, and I had some health problrms as a result. I was terrified I would hurt myself on the equipment, but the trainers always accomodated my concerns and were flexible in changing the excercises to suit me".
At the start of the program, participants undertook a fitness assessment, determining their current health age. Margaret's age came back as 80. Her actual age is 75.
But by the end of the 11 weeks, her assessment came back as 75. "I lost 5 years! If I can keep it at that age for awhile I will be very happy with that", she said.
Margaret will continue to build up strength, join a gym closer to home and is looking forward to staying in her own home rather than moving into care.
Those aged 65 or older have an opportunity to make use of this $1200 program for just $50. Call CatholicCare on 4254 9342 to enquire about this program.
